One of the solutions would be the construction of a dam, the Lontras reservoir, with an estimated cost of R$880 million.

The region of Ceará that has the largest fruit and vegetable production is Ibiapaba. This is an area that puts food on the table of families and revenue in the government budget.

But Ibiapaba, which promotes so much abundance, also asks for a little retribution in the form of public policies.

The increase in production potential depends on actions that are directly conditioned on water availability and the capacity to store and distribute water throughout the year, which would make the implementation of an irrigated perimeter viable, but this project requires strong coordination to guarantee success for the region.

This topic was discussed in a recent meeting between managers and parliamentarians with the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR). The discussion progressed towards adjusting and adapting alternatives to provide conditions for implementing this agenda.

One solution would be to build a dam, the Lontras Reservoir, with an estimated cost of R$880 million. This high cost is a hindrance in Brasília. However, at the meeting, a simpler demand was put forward: replacing the Lontras Reservoir with five smaller dams.

This set of small dams would cost approximately R$300 million and would effectively enable the implementation and operation of the irrigated perimeter.

Ten municipalities in the region will directly benefit from the implementation of this proposal. Fruit and vegetable production should increase, as should the entire agricultural sector, generating income and creating direct and indirect jobs throughout the year.

These same municipalities have a population of over 400,000 inhabitants, but the entire state will benefit from this agenda, due to the growth in the production of healthy foods and the increase in revenue from supplying these same items to other states and countries.

Developing actions and projects that promote water security and agricultural production is essential to provide new opportunities for municipalities in Ceará, ensure water supply to urban and rural populations, enable the installation of industries and other companies, increase tax collection and, most importantly, make Ceará accelerate its socioeconomic growth in a fairer way in all regions.

Ibiapaba asks for attention and priority at this time.
